Delivery & Shipping

Shipping Options for Bikes

  • Ready to Ride shipping. With Ready to Ride shipping, the bicycle is delivered directly to you and arrives 99% assembled, within 7-10 business days, depending on where you live. All you need to do is unwrap the bike, complete a few simple assembly steps, and be riding in less than 10 minutes. Ready to Ride shipping is also our recommended solution for gift purchases to be sent anywhere in the contiguous US for a flat fee of $135 per bike. Due to extra weight and dimensions, electric bikes ship Ready to Ride for $325.

  • Find Your Own Mechanic. You'll receive a partially assembled bike packed in a smaller factory box that was fine-tuned by our mechanics. This option is not for novices. It will not include instructions or specialized tools needed for the complicated process of building a bike for safe riding. You will need to contact a reputable bike shop in your area to schedule an appointment for their mechanics to build and tune the bike. If you run into problems with your bike down the road, we are only able to assist you if you can provide documentation that your bike was professionally assembled in a certified bike shop. PUBLIC is not responsible for any damage, failures, or injuries caused by bicycles that were not professionally assembled. The cost for this method is $55.

  • Store Pickup. If you live near a PUBLIC store, you can place an order online to pickup in store. We will call you when it is ready for pickup, and you can ride away on your new bike. Due to limited storage space, orders not picked up within 14 days of receiving notification that your order is ready will incur additional storage charges. Orders not picked up within 30 days will be canceled and returned. Please contact us before ordering to make arrangements if you need to pickup your order at a later date.

  • Need it now? Call any of our stores to see if we have your items in stock. If one of our stores has what you're looking for, you can place an order with them over the phone.

Shipping Options for Accessories

We ship via UPS. Signature is required. Currently we only ship to the continental US. If you live near a PUBLIC store and your order total is over $100, you can place an order online to pickup in store. We will call you when your order is ready for pick-up. Please pickup your online order within 7 days. Due to limited storage space, orders not picked up within 14 days will incur additional storage charges. Orders not picked up within 30 days will be canceled and returned. Please contact us before ordering to make arrangements if you need to pickup your order at a later date.

Return Policy

We offer a “Love at First Ride” Guarantee. If you’re not 100% satisfied with any item, simply return it to us within 30 days for an exchange or refund (less shipping and assembly costs). If your bike or gear is returned in new condition without scratches or marks on the frame, we will provide a full refund. If we cannot resell your bike or gear at full retail value, we will provide partial refund based on the market value of the returned bike or gear. Please make sure to package your order as it was packaged when it arrived to you, in order to avoid any shipping damage. You will need to pay for the cost of return shipping, but we will gladly ship any exchanged merchandise free of charge. Once we receive and process your return, we will refund the purchase amount to the original form of payment or apply the appropriate credit to an exchange. This could take 1-2 weeks. Please email us at customerservice@publicbikes.com or call our customer service team at 1-888-450-0123 to request a return form. Final Sale items may not be returned.

Pricing Adjustments

If previously purchased merchandise is marked down within seven (7) days of the original order date, we will adjust the price of an item, once. To receive a price adjustment, call or our customer service team. Please include your original order number with your request. Eligible refunds will be applied to your original form of payment.

Public Bike Size Recommendations

A bike that fits properly is more fun to ride. The guides below offer size suggestion based on height in inches. If you have measuring tape, you may also determine your size by measuring your leg length plus one inch, which is your stand over measurement. For all bikes, we recommend at least 1 inch of space between you and the top tube of the bike.

When in doubt, contact our customer service team via email at customerservice@publicbikes.com or phone at 1-888-450-0123. For children’s bikes, smaller bikes are always easier for beginners.

*Please note some riders may be a little outside of these height range recommendations but prefer the feel of a larger or smaller bike. Stand over height measurement is not as important as how the bike geometry feels while it is being ridden.

Helmet Size Recommendations

The guides below offer size suggestion by brand based on head circumference. To measure your head circumference, place the tape measure slightly above the ear and bring it across the mid forehead completely circling the head about 1 inch above the eyebrows. Take several measurements to make sure you have the largest size. If you do not have a tape measure, use a string and measure it against a ruler. The charts below will assist you on which size is the best helmet fit. If a measurement falls in between a size, go up to the larger size.

  • The bicycle frame and fork are covered for the lifetime of the original owner

This warranty extends from the date of purchase, applies only to the original owner, and is not transferable. PUBLIC Bikes, Inc. is not responsible for incidental or consequential damages. Once a service appointment is made with store staff, bring your bike in at the agreed upon time and service will be performed. You will be contacted when the service is completed. A service membership covers the preventative labor outlined under our Standard Tune-Up only. A Service membership does not mean that you will not have any service costs. Please refer to our service department for other service costs and jobs available. Service plans are only valid on PUBLIC bicycles and at PUBLIC Bikes retail stores with service centers.

Memberships do not cover components required to keep your bike running safely. Nor does it always cover labor to install those parts. Service memberships do not include non-routine repairs such as repairs for damage due to a crash, repairs for vandalism, or repairs due to misuse or lack of maintenance. Service memberships are not a warranty and do not replace or supersede the manufacturer’s warranty.

General Questions

How Far Can I Go On a Single Charge?

Real world mileage will vary depending on level of assist and terrain. In the highest usagee scenario, with the maximum level of assist and frequent use of the throttle, a realistic range is around 20-25 miles. Most people ride with a lower assist level, which allows for a range up to 45 miles or more on a charge. BionX rates the maximum range of this system as 65 miles under lowest assist.

How Fast Do the PUBLIC Electric Bikes Go?

By law, PUBLIC Electric bikes can only assist up to 20 miles per hour. You can pedal as fast as you like beyond that speed, but the electric motor is not allowed to assist beyond 20 MPH.

How Much Does it Weigh?

PUBLIC Electric bikes weigh approximately 55 pounds.

How Long Does the Battery Last?

Your battery will last between 2 to 3 years of heavy use, and 3 to 5 years if used less frequently.

How Often Do I Need to Charge the Battery?

Nightly charging after use is recommended. New BionX batteries are designed with a deep sleep circuit to protect the battery life in case it is not frequently charged. We highly recommend charging the battery fully at least once every 6 months to keep it in good health. Failure to charge the battery fully once every 6 months may lead to battery degradation.

How Long Does it Take to Charge the Battery?

From fully depleted to fully charged takes 5-6 hours.

What is the Capacity of the Battery?

2015 PUBLIC Electric bikes use a 49 volt 423Wh lithium ion BionX battery.

How Powerful is the Motor?

PUBLIC Electric bikes use the powerful and proven BionX P series 350 watt motor. This ultra reliable motor is durable, silent and fully sealed to the elements.

What is "Mountain Mode"?

For customers who ride in particularly hilly terrain, PUBLIC Electric bikes have a special "Mountain Mode". Mountain mode should be enabled any time particularly hilly terrain is encountered and will help prevent the motor from overheating. This mode can be enabled by holding down the "+" button for two seconds, at which point the console will display a flashing "MOUNTAIN" message, and is deactivated by pressing the "-" key on the console.

How Will I Know When it's Time to Charge My PUBLIC Electric Bike?

The handlebar display has a battery indicator icon showing the remaining power in the battery. We recommend charging the battery nightly after use.

Can I Add a BionX System to My Current PUBLIC Bike?

As of 2015, BionX has discontinued the previous model of e-bike kits we offered, so we no longer carry BionX kits for retrofitting standard bikes with electric motors. It's actually more expensive now to purchase a new BionX kit, plus the additional parts and labor required to convert an older bike, than it is to purchase a new PUBLIC Electric bike with BionX technology built-in. Our affordable new PUBLIC Electric bikes feature the latest 48v BionX high-capacity battery and a number of other significant upgrades to the frame and components that make them an amazing value, and a lot more fun and safe to ride than a bike that was not designed to be an e-bike.

Ownership Questions

How Safe Are These Bikes?

PUBLIC Electric bikes are exceptionally safe electric bicycles. All PUBLIC Electric bikes come equipped with powerful disc brakes to stop you quickly, built in rear rack light and reflective decals for nighttime safety, and heavy duty steel frames and forks to provide a sturdy and stable ride in all conditions. Due to the added weight of an e-bike, extra care should be taken when parking and locking the bike to prevent it from tipping over.

How Should I Securely Lock This Bike?

We recommend you securely lock this bike whether parked indoors or out on the town. To be extra secure we recommend using more than one high-security U-lock, such as two hardened U-locks or a U-lock plus a chain or cable.

Can I Ride My PUBLIC Electric Bike in the Rain?

Yes, the BionX kit is fully sealed and can be ridden in the rain. To prevent corrosion all bikes are best stored indoors.

Do I Need a Driver's License, Registration, or Insurance to Ride My PUBLIC Electric Bike?

No license, registration or insurance is required since the maximum speed tops at 20 mph. Simply obey current bicycle laws in your community.

Can I Carry a PUBLIC Electric Bike on My Car or Vehicle Bike Rack?

Check with your rack manufacturer about the maximum weight your rack can carry. Many bike racks are designed to carry several bikes so many of them should be able to carry one heavier electric bike.

What Kind of Maintenance Does This Bike Require?

Standard bicycle maintenance should be expected; however, the motor and battery should need no maintenance.

Do PUBLIC Electric Bikes Require Much Maintenance?

Like all bicycles, your PUBLIC Electric bike should be regularly serviced by a qualified bike shop, at least once a year. PUBLIC Electric bikes are equipped with ultra low maintenance BionX gearless and brushless electric motors that don't require any maintenance. The only part requiring extra attention is the battery. Before storing your PUBLIC Electric bike for a long period of time (i.e. winter), the battery should be fully charged, and then should be recharged fully at least once every 6 months.

What is the Warranty on the BionX System?

The BionX warranty covers a three year period for all the BionX parts, for the original owner. Certain conditions do apply. Please refer to the BionX manual for further information.

Delivery Questions

How Much Does it Cost to Ship My PUBLIC Electric Bike?

It costs $325 to ship your bike fully assembled to anywhere in the continental USA. We don't ship outside the USA, or to Hawaii or Alaska.

Once I Place an Order, How Long Does it Take Until I Receive My PUBLIC Electric Bike?

For all in-stock models we typically ship within 5 business days. Depending where you live, your bike should arrive at your door within 2 weeks of placing the order.

What Is Your Return Policy?

We have a 30-day guarantee policy. You are responsible for the cost to ship the bike back. If there any scratches or defects on the bike from your use, we will deduct from a full refund based on the quality of the returned bike.

Is Assembly Required?

If you purchase a PUBLIC bike directly from us through publicbikes.com or contact one of our stores, we can assemble your bike at no additional cost to you for pick-up at our PUBLIC retail stores - and of course there is no shipping charge too. Call ahead to check our inventory. If you live far from one of our retail stores, we recommend our Ready to Ride Shipping option where you receive a bike that's been 99% assembled by our mechanics and is delivered right to your door. You can also purchase an assembled bike through one of our authorized PUBLIC dealers located throughout the country.

How Much Do Your Bikes Weigh?

Our bikes weigh anywhere from 28-32 lbs, depending on the size and number of gears on the bike, and the electric bike weighs 55lbs. Lighter bikes tend to be made of aluminum or carbon, but we've built our bikes from lightweight steel which will last a lifetime and beyond – and will comfortably absorb the shocks of urban riding significantly better than other materials.

How Do I Test Ride a Bike?

We have test ride locations in the San Francisco Bay Area and other select locations around the country. You can test ride our bikes at one of our PUBLIC retail stores. Please click here for test ride locations and schedules. We also have dealers around the country who sell PUBLIC bikes and can special order a bike for you.

Where Else Are You Selling Your Bikes?

You can purchase a PUBLIC bike through our brand site and stores as well as dealers located throughout the country.

How Far and Fast Can an Electric Bike Go?

Mileage will vary depending on level of assist and terrain. In the highest usage scenario, a realistic range is around 20-25 miles. Most people ride with a lower assist level, which allows for a range up to 45 miles or more on a charge. To maintain optimal mileage, we recommend charging your battery nightly. If your battery is fully depleted, we expect it will take five to six hours to charge back up. The battery will last between two to five years depending on usage.

By law, PUBLIC Electric bikes can only assist up to 20 miles per hour. You can pedal as fast as you like beyond that speed, but the electric motor is not allowed to assist beyond 20 MPH.

Where are Your Bikes Made?

This subject is near and dear to our heart. We are a California company and we design our bikes in San Francisco. The final assembly and fine-tuning is performed with care by our expert bike mechanics in Oakland. The different bike components are sourced from all over the world, from Brooks of England to Shimano of Japan, and the frames are built to our unique specifications by leading bike factories in Taiwan primarily. We also source some components from major bicycle industry leaders in China.

The bike industry in Taiwan is highly sophisticated, and bike manufacturers there have earned a reputation for excellence in producing world-class bikes for decades. We explored numerous manufacturing sources when we set out to establish PUBLIC. We visited bike makers in the U.S., Holland, and Italy, and all of them directed us to Asia. In the US today, 93% of the bicycles sold are made in China, and 6% are made in Taiwan (source). We are proud to be among the handful of quality bike companies working with the some of the best bike builders in the world in Taiwan.

Legendary bike companies like Schwinn, Bianchi, and Raleigh rely on manufacturers there. In fact, newer great US headquartered companies like Trek, Cannondale, and Specialized have most of their bikes made in Asia. We visited these manufacturers and met many family businesses that go back 20–30 years. They are excellent craftsmen with high manufacturing standards and a strong work ethic. We visit our manufacturers several times a year and always come away impressed with their craftsmanship, labor practices, and care for their employees, products, and partnerships.

While the U.S. – and Europe too – has lost its ability to compete on moderately priced “production” bikes, the U.S. excels internationally at handmade bikes. There are numerous highly skilled-framed builders that we can refer you to for a U.S. made frame. We know many of these craftsmen personally. These handmade bikes cost more than ours, of course, as well they should. There are also numerous independent bike stores in urban areas in the U.S. that can build a great custom bike for you, as well as superb high-end limited production manufacturers like Seven Cycles, Independent Fabricators, and Serotta that make some of the best custom bikes in the world. Keep in mind that all of these superb manufacturers rely to some degree on some foreign based components.

PUBLIC is committed to creating a free world for all. Through a partnership with Made In A Free World, we are using the FRDM™ platform to analyze leading risk indicators and protect against forced labor in our supply chain.

Where can I locate my serial number and register my bike to assist in the event of theft?

Each PUBLIC model features a unique serial number that identifies the make and model of your bike. The unique serial number also proves ownership of the bike to the purchaser in our customer database. Your unique serial number is engraved into the frame and located underneath the bottom bracket where the crank arms meet the frame. Simply turn your bike upside down and record the number (see diagram below).

In the United States, thousands of bicycles disappear each day, never to be seen by their owners. In attempt to curb theft and increase the chances of recovery, many public and private providers now offer bicycle registration. The best chance of recovering a stolen bicycle is having a registered serial number. We strongly recommend registering the serial number of each PUBLIC bike with one of these organization listed below. Please check with your local police department for other options if these services are not provided in your area.

National Bike Registry - http://www.nationalbikeregistry.com/
The Bike Index - https://bikeindex.org/
SAFE Bikes - http://sfsafe.org/

Police departments use these databases to check for ownership when they receive recovered bikes. When a bike is marked stolen, it gives them a quick way to get in touch and reunite the bike with the rightful owner.
