$699 $499
The PUBLIC R16 flat bar city road bike features everything you love about our popular drop bar road bikes - the walk-up apartment-friendly lightweight chromoly road bike frame, nimble street tires, and versatile range of 16 speeds to power you through all kinds of adventures. Combining these features with high-performance design and a modern commuter-friendly flat bar cockpit, this bike is for ideal upright riding in tough city traffic.

The new PUBLIC R16 flat bar road bike offers the lightest frame and widest range of speeds than any other flat bar PUBLIC city bike. This bike is perfect for men and women who want a high-performance road bike but prefer flat bars over drop bars.

Like other PUBLIC city road bikes, the PUBLIC R16 flat bar road bike is built with dual bottle cage mounts, and front and rear rack mounts, perfect for our Slender Rear Road Bike Rack and Porteur Front Rack. Shimano Claris derailleurs and Rapid-fire trigger shifters offer the same effortless gear shifting found on road bikes costing hundreds more.

The quick-release road bike wheels include allen key bolt-on skewers for added theft protection. Narrow 32mm commuter road tires offer nimbler handling than other PUBLIC city bikes with plenty of shock absorption for rough city streets. Removable sleek matching fenders keep your jeans clean on wet streets without compromising performance or style.

Trick it out with a Brooks road bike saddle, a rack and pannier bag for all your essentials, or a front metal basket for flexible cargo capacity. City essentials include a strong U-lock, bright rechargeable bike lights, and a helmet that's cool enough to actually wear.

We make buying online unbelievably easy, with our unique Ready to Ride shipping option that delivers a 99% assembled bike right to your doorstep, carefully tuned and packed by our mechanics in the Bay Area. And our 30-day Love at First Ride Guarantee ensures you'll love your bike, or we'll take it back. Period. You have nothing to lose except traffic jams, missed trains, and surge pricing.

Public Bike Size Recommendations

A bike that fits properly is more fun to ride. The guides below offer size suggestion based on height in inches. If you have measuring tape, you may also determine your size by measuring your leg length plus one inch, which is your stand over measurement. For all bikes, we recommend at least 1 inch of space between you and the top tube of the bike.

When in doubt, contact our customer service team via email at or phone at 1-888-450-0123. For children’s bikes, smaller bikes are always easier for beginners.

*Please note some riders may be a little outside of these height range recommendations but prefer the feel of a larger or smaller bike. Stand over height measurement is not as important as how the bike geometry feels while it is being ridden.
